Repowering your outboard can make all the difference

One can have the right tackle, years of experience and the uncanny knack that separates a good angler from a great one, but it’s all for naught if they can’t get to where the fish are.

In the case of professional anglers, they need to find that location and fast.

Tom Hardy has been an elite-level angler for years, competing in tournaments across North America, including the Bassmaster Elite series in the United States.

“My boat’s 10 years old, in great working condition and rigged with the latest and greatest in marine electronics,” says Hardy. “Having said that I wasn’t trusting my current outboard motor, and even had some breakdowns that cost me important fishing time during tournaments. Repowering my boat with a current engine was my preference.”

Hardy admits to being particular with his equipment but says he’s been working with the same marine dealer for many years and trusts their recommendations.

“They became a Suzuki dealer in 2020, and I waited some time doing my research before making the switch,” he says. “I spoke with people I trust at the dealership and was surprised to find out about their warranty claims history, with no claims to date since 2020.”

The benefits of repowering were apparent and immediate.

“Increased acceleration and hole shot, improved fuel economy and overall performance and handling of the boat were a few things I noticed right off the bat,” says Hardy. “I’ve been very impressed by the torque the motor produces throughout the entire throttle range. It’s made driving in rough water conditions much easier.”

Hardy says not having to purchase and carry two-stroke oil has been another added benefit. He’s now been able to eliminate the oil reservoir in the boat, allowing for space to add an extra marine battery in the future to support the power draw from his current marine electronics.

And as a bonus, Hardy says the motor is the smoothest and quietest he’s ever experienced.

“The first time on the water my wife noticed how much easier it was to carry on a conversation while boating,” he says.

Hardy says the rigging on the boat looks like it was factory-installed, and the boat is now operating better than ever. The dealer even water-tested the boat, to ensure they had the best propeller installed for speed and performance.

“The main benefit to me has been peace of mind, knowing that I can concentrate on fishing and know that the motor will start and get me back to the dock,” he says.
