A small, almost undetectable bit of sawdust is sitting in a corner of the floor.
To the average cottager, this looks like a little bit of regular dust or debris to be swept up and forgotten about. But to the experts at OneTek Pest Solutions, it’s a warning sign that carpenter ants have inhabited a building. It’s best to address pest problems like these before they get out of control.
“It’s why we recommend our preventive maintenance plans,” explains Nathan Kaye, co-owner of OneTek. “I was recently at one cottage installing a mouse control program when I noticed a colony of carpenter ants had moved into a basement crawl space area. Now, we can find a solution for both pest issues to protect the property and the family who lives there.”
These small but mighty insects may not seem like a problem as individuals or pairs, but a full colony can decimate a building structure and cause extensive – and expensive – damage if left to their devices. They find moist and rotting wood to nest in, then go to work picking away at the material.
This is one of the reasons being on a regularly scheduled preventative maintenance program is important, explains Nathan’s business partner Bryan Carrigan. OneTek will schedule regular visits throughout the year and keep a watchful eye for other potentially harmful situations.
“Our proactive approach allows us to catch these pests before they become a big issue,” says Nathan. “We work year around and can offer our clients peace of mind with a set of eyes on their home or cottage during the winter when they’re not there.”
Nathan has been in the pest control business for 20 years, and he has owned his own business in Muskoka for the last 15. OneTek provides solutions for all insects, rodents and other pests to Muskoka, Simcoe and the surrounding areas.
“We’ll shield you from unwanted invaders, so your only worries are how to best enjoy your cottage.”
Mosquito season just happens to coincide with cottage season – or maybe it’s not such a coincidence. To maximize your outdoor enjoyment, it’s a good idea to get regular mosquito control treatments throughout the summer months – right through into August.
“Monthly treatments in the spring and summer will keep mosquito populations down and your enjoyment levels up,” says Nathan. “We only treat targeted areas where mosquitoes will be hiding.”
