Muskoka Teak

Massive umbrellas protect from solar assault

Just as the fictional Men in Black save the earth from otherworldly invaders, Muskoka Teak’s newest addition defends people and objects from UV rays beaming down from the cosmos.

The Port Carling store now carries oversized umbrellas that can be as large as 24 feet square, providing nearly 600 square feet of shade. They also come in rectangles up to 18 by 24, as well as a 24-foot round model.

Ocean Master umbrellas are made by Tuuci using marine-grade materials, including stainless-steel hardware, aluminum struts, and tightly woven fabrics that are geared toward waterfront living.

The protection provided by the quality and size of these umbrellas is welcome as the hot rays from the sun beat down relentlessly on clear summer days.

“We all know Vitamin D is a good thing, but too much sun exposure is quite dangerous,” says Trevor Philbrick, who owns Muskoka Teak with his brother John. “Burns are unpleasant, of course, but UV radiation also has other negative effects.”

Too much UV exposure can cause premature aging of the skin, as well as more serious impacts such as skin cancer, and damaging eyes and your immune system. Nobody is immune from these effects, no matter how much melanin your skin contains.

Experts particularly advise limiting sun exposure between mid-morning and late afternoon, when the sun’s rays are most impactful. This is why Muskoka Teak carries only the very best umbrellas on the market: to offer protection when you need it most.

Having shade in the right spaces allows you to enjoy the fresh, warm midday air without the sun exposure. Good umbrellas also protect your material valuables from sun exposure, which can fade and damage wood, plastic, upholstery and fibreglass.

“Having a good umbrella is vital for health and safety during those long summer days at the cottage,” says John. “The coverage provides a shield when UV rays are at their most potent.”

Every umbrella line available at Muskoka Teak’s Port Carling location – whether large or small – is built with quality components to last generations. They all have their own distinguishing characteristics, but one common thread is their ability to shade, strength, and durability.

Though Tuuci makes what is considered to be the best umbrellas on the market, they are not alone in offering top quality products.

Indeed, Muskoka Teak has been carrying FIM Umbrellas for two decades due to their European stylings and ergonomic, user-friendly features, like the ability to rotate the umbrella 360-degrees to match the sun’s path through the day.

Frankford is another excellent umbrella option, which also offers 360-degree rotation. Since 1898, the company has been manufacturing high quality products for both commercial and residential use.

Built with commercial use in mind and featuring marine-grade canvas supported by aluminum and stainless steel, their umbrellas are ideal for busy patios and boathouse decks.

“No matter which umbrella size or style suits your space best, these are all generational products built to last for decades,” explains John. “The most important thing is that they will provide the exceptional shade and protection you need.”

Teak too
Though these amazing umbrellas have become a staple of the Muskoka Teak product lines, one can never forget where the business gets its name.

John and Trevor have always been drawn to quality and when they started their furniture business almost three decades ago, they knew they wanted their products built with the strongest, most durable wood on the planet.

They sustainably source all their teakwood offerings from Indonesia, whether it is their flagship Muskoka chairs, harvest tables and dining chairs, or their line of Canadian wildlife sculptures – including the famous teak moose that stands proudly
in front of their store.

Teak is strong and durable, with a natural resistance to water, fungus and specific insects due to its tight grain and high natural oil content. It’s a particularly popular choice for those who live on the water.

“We recognized early that teak’s natural characteristics made it the perfect choice for outdoor furniture for waterfront properties throughout Muskoka, and Canada as a whole,” says Trevor. “All our teak offerings are made to last through the generations: just as the cottage passes down to the children and grandchildren, so too will the teak furniture.”

Whether you’re on the lookout for a shield from the sun, a specific piece of outdoor furniture, or a whole new outdoor setup, quality products and sound advice can be found in the showroom.
