MC McLean Contracting

Modular building offers superior efficiency and off-grid compatibility

When Jason McLean first heard about Honomobo, he was blown away by the company and its approach to building. As an experienced contractor and the owner of MC McLean Contracting, Jason has always looked for ways to streamline the building process and reduce the amount of waste generated onsite.

“Looking through their designs was like looking into the future,” he says. Today Jason not only lives in a Honomobo modular home, but is a proud part-owner of the company.

Honomobo specializes in building modern, modular homes with the highest level of precision in the shortest amount of time. Each home is built to completion in the company’s climate-controlled factory in Edmonton before being packaged for transport, and shipped in modules to your property where it is assembled on a foundation.

Because the home is built indoors by an expert team of tradespeople, all the elements inside the home are protected from the weather throughout the construction process.

The process also avoids all kinds of factors that can otherwise delay a construction project, including bad weather, scheduling issues with subtrades, supply chain problems and more. A Honomobo home, upon completion of the Design and Permitting phase, can be built and delivered in as little as 14 weeks.

Once the model arrives at the site, the final assembly on the foundation only takes two weeks, Jason notes, giving you a home or cottage in record time.

Modern and sustainable
In addition to their speed, Honomobo has also become known for their eco-friendly and energy-efficient, modern minimalist designs.

“We first started building the frames from steel shipping containers,” says Jason. Since then, the company has moved to virgin corten steel – a material famous for its strength and its extreme corrosion resistance. Using the corrugated steel lets Honomobo optimize the frame’s density, strength, and longevity.

“Sustainability and efficiency are at the forefront of every design.”

Every model is insulated using a spray polyurethane foam insulation, resulting in a building that can contribute to a Net Zero efficiency rating. “Our homes are so well insulated that they’ve become ideal building solutions for communities as far north as the Northwest Territories, and as far south as the California desert.”

Air-source heat pumps are installed to efficiently heat and cool the building. “These air-source heat pumps can deliver up to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy they consume,” Jason explains. “They transfer heat from the air rather than converting it from a fuel the way combustion heating systems do.” This completely eliminates the reliance on fossil fuels.

In addition to featuring large windows, strategically placed to bathe the interior in natural light, Honomobo homes are designed to be solar-ready, empowering homeowners to go off-grid or to supplement grid-supplied power if they wish.

By installing solar panels, you can transform your Honomobo into a self-sufficient haven, generating clean electricity to power your daily life.

“Honomobo isn’t waiting for the government regulations restricting fossil fuels to take effect,” says Jason. “Each model is designed to meet Canada’s projected sustainability goals for 2030 today and allow our clients to take the next step toward energy independence at their own pace.”

Beautiful finishes
Honomobo’s models come in a range of sizes and floorplans, from 96 sq. ft. single office designs to 2,240 sq. ft two-floor retreats, complete with four bedrooms and four baths. “While the floor plans are fixed, they offer a range of finish options and upgrades to make it your own.”

This approach allows you to tailor your home to your needs and stay within budget, without sacrificing your timeline.

“Our process is designed for full transparency; from developing a project budget to creating foundation drawings to final delivery and installation,” says Jason.

While the price doesn’t include the costs associated with site preparation, utilities and foundation, Jason’s team is there to help navigate these preparations and their costs if you wish, to get your site ready for your home’s arrival.

“So much can vary depending on the type of foundation used, the land preparations needed, utility availabilities, and more,” says Jason. “We can handle the entire process, including site feasibilities, design, engineering and permits, as well as site services such as preparing the foundation and managing the logistics of getting your new home from the factory to your property.”

“It’s all about making it easy to live comfortably and efficiently with a modern, sustainable, modular home or cottage.”
