Deck-building decisions have a long-lasting impact

You may only build one deck in your lifetime, so you want to ensure it’s going to last – and look great – for decades. The right material, the right design and the right location are all important factors. But equally vital is selecting the right contractor.

“If you are looking to add a deck to your property, you may not have the skill or time to do it yourself,” says Jason Boyter, who has 25 years of experience building decks with Hickory Dickory Decks and has owned the Bracebridge/Gravenhurst franchise since 2016. “Choosing a contractor to build your project can be overwhelming, but you want to ensure the deck is built right and is safe for your family to use.”

Andrew Laurat, who owns the Parry Sound/ Port Carling Hickory Dickory Decks franchise, says, “Hickory Dickory Decks has been serving valued customers for 37 years with over 80 franchises across Canada and the USA. Our specialization is decks and outdoor living structures.”

Andrew says their teams meet weekly online to discuss the latest aspects of deck design and to share knowledge and experience with one another.

“To all of us, every project we undertake is not just a deck, it’s a Hickory Dickory Deck, constructed to the highest standards using the best materials to help you enjoy life outdoors. Our website, decks.ca, provides customers with excellent resources to help you get started,” he says.

“We communicate with you during the entire process to keep you informed along the way. Our work is backed up by a two-year workmanship warranty along with specific brand warranties on our low-maintenance decking materials.”

Visual proof
Hickory Dickory Decks has a portfolio containing hundreds of projects. The photos and videos not only give you a sense of the work they’ve done (a total of more than 35,000 decks since they began in 1987) but can also provide inspiration for your deck project.

They’ve also established a proven process that ensures you enjoy a beautiful, finished product and also enjoy the process of working with the team throughout the deck-building project.

That process begins with a consultation conducted primarily through phone calls or emails.

“That initial consultation with you allows us to answer any questions you have and get an understanding of the scope of your project,” says Andrew.

The initial consultation is followed by a face-to-face meeting, typically at the client’s home or cottage.

“That allows us to see the space and discuss key elements in helping to design your dream deck,” says Jason.

“We’ll take measurements, go through our comprehensive design questionnaire (size, budget, personal preferences, etc.), and encourage you to provide input and share your vision. We will also share samples of composite and low-maintenance material options and highlight the features we think may work for you and your space.”

Once the team has prepared a design and a quotation, they will set up a second meeting. They’ll share samples of decking materials, present the design, and help you visualize what your new deck will bring to your outdoor living space.

Preparing to build
The team handles every aspect of pre-construction, including permits, tearing out your old deck if needed, organizing material delivery, installing footings, and preparing the site for the day construction begins.

This ensures that construction can proceed quickly and smoothly, so you can sit back and relax as your custom deck project comes to life.

The final stage of the project is review and closing.

“Once your project is complete, we’ll chat with you to make sure your needs have been met and ensure you’re happy with the finished product,” says Andrew.

“There’s nothing more rewarding than going back to a completed project and seeing the joy on our customers’ faces and knowing they’ll enjoy the deck for many years.”
